Description: Shortly rhizomatous perennial, greyish lanate-villous, lacking stolons. Stems stout, erect or ascending, 6-30 cm. Basal leaves oblong-elliptic, attenuate below. Cauline leaves 1-2-paired, obovate-oblong, crenate-dentate. Verticillasters crowded, 4-6(-12)-flowered. Bracts obovate-orbicular, coarsely 3-7-dentate, exceeding flowers, often purplish. Calyx 6-9 mm, teeth 1-2 x tube. Corolla 10-13 mm, with twisted exannulate tube, limb resupinate,'lower lip' cream, 3-lobed, 'upper lip' violet-blue, bifid. Stamens included in tube.

In flora of Turkey, the genus Ajuga is represented by 14 species and 27 subspecific taxa (Davis 1982, 1988, Baytop 1999).

Biology: Flowering from April to July.

Habitat: Forests, scrub, rocky slopes and pasture, s.L-3130 m.

Distribution: Sicily to Crimea, W. Syria, Cyprus, Caucasia, N.W. Iran.
In Turkey: Mainly North and W., S., & E. Anatolia (absent from S.E. & Mesopotamia)
East Aegean Islands: Lesvos, Chios, Pityos, Ikaria, Samos, Fournoi, Kampos, Kos.

Uses: Ajuga species are used in folk medicine of different parts of the world for the treatment of rheumatism, gout, asthma, diabetes, malaria, ulcers and diarrhea and have antibacterial, antitumor, antifeedant, and vulnerary properties (Chen et al., 1996;BenJannet etal.,2000;Zargari,1990).
