Common names: Italian bugloss [En], Buglosse d'Italie, Buglosse azurée [Fr], Italiaanse ossetong [Nl], Italienische Ochsenzunge [De], Αγόγλωσσος [Gr], Siğir dili [Tu]

Finike, ANTALYA ● Turkey

Description: Bristly perennial to 80 cm height. It has a densely hairy stem, straight lance-shaped leaves and petite tubular flowers of bright violet-blue.

Biology: Flowering from March to June.

Habitat: road sides, waste fields, up to 1000m.

Distribution: native to Europe and western Asia, cultivated elsewhere.

Uses: The flowers are edible. It is an excellent and decorative addition to the salad bowls, or used as a garnish. The tender young leaves and young flowering shoots can be cooked and eaten as a vegetable.
The whole plant is antitussive, depurative, diaphoretic and diuretic. Use internally with caution, the plant contains the alkaloid cynoglossine which can have a paralyzing effect.
