Description: Length: 6.5-8mm. The body and head are completely dark, except the red-brown eyes. The wings are dark and cover perfectly the abdomen at rest.
Biology : Adults can be seen from March to September and usually on the flowers of white umbells such as Heracleum, Angelica, Oenanthe and Torilis.
Habitat: The larvae inhabit organically-rich mud at the edge of seepages, brooks and small water bodies in woodland and scrub. They live beneath fallen leaves or other debris in very shallow water.
Distribution: North and Central Europe.
