Cicindela campestris suffriani Loew 1943
Common names: Green Tiger Beetle [En], Cicindèle champêtre [Fr], Groene zandloopkever [Nl], Feld-Sandlaufkäfer [De], Cicindela campestre [Es]

Apano Kastro, NAXOS ● Greece

Description: Length: 10.5 – 14.5 mm. All tiger beetles are long-legged and fast-running. When disturbed they make fast, buzzing short flights. Adults are a beautiful iridescent green in colour with yellowish spots on the elytra or wing cases. Their large eyes and mandibles belie the fact that these beetles are superb predators.

It is divided into several subspecies:
C. c. atlantis Mandl, 1944
C. c. balearica Sydow, 1934
C. c. cyprensis Hlisnikowsky, 1929 – Cyprus
C. c. nigrita Dejean, 1825
C. c. olivieria Brullé, 1832 – Albania, Former Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey
C. c. palustris Motschulsky, 1840 - South Turkey, Near East
C. c. pontica Fischer von Waldheim, 1825 – Greece, South Turkey, Near East, Caucasus, Siberia, Cyprus
C. c. saphyrina Gené, 1836
C. c. siculorum Schilder, 1953 – Sicily
C. c. suffriani Loew, 1943 – Greece (Cyclades, Crete, Rhodes, Sporades), Sicily, Cyprus
C. c. calabrica Mandl, 1944

Biology: The adults can be seen from April until September. Both adults and larvae are fearsome predators of other invertebrates. The larvae dig pits, typically on pathways, in order to create a pitfall trap.

Habitat: This tiger beetle is always found in sunny sites. It occurs in areas with bare ground and little vegetation such as sandy heaths and hillsides, and raised bogs. It is associated with well-draining soils.

Distribution: It has a wide Eurasian range, and is found from Europe across Siberia to the Pacific Ocean.
