Description: Perennial plant of 20-60 cm. It has generally a creeping, brown-scaled rhizome and loosely tufted stems.
The many glaucous, folded leaves are 3-6 mm broad, not exceeding the inflorescence.
The spikes are usually 4-5 and well-spaced, the upper 2 male, c. 4 cm long, those below female.
The Cypriot specimens have been assigned to subsp. serrulata because the female spikes are all erect, shorter but wider, 10-25 x 4-6 mm, with 3-nerved glumes; utricles longer, usually beaked, 3-4 x 1.5-1.6 mm and larger nuts, c. 2.5 x 1 mm.
Biology: Flowering from March to June.
Habitat: Forest glades, meadows.
Distribution: Mediterranean region, including North Africa, Western Asia up to Pakistan.
