Bembecia ichneumoniformis Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775 ♀
Common names: Six-belted Clearwing [En], Sésie ichneumoniforme [Fr], Klaverwespvlinder [Nl]

Beauraing ● Belgium

Description It’s a very distinctive day-flying clearwing with the six yellowish bands on the abdomen, but can be overlooked when in flight as it is very similar to the solitary wasps. Once landed it is easy to see it is a clearwing moth with its mostly transparent wings, only edged in scales. The wingspan is 15-21 mm.

Biology: The larvae feed on the roots of Lotus species and Anthyllis vulneraria. Other recorded foodplants include Lotus corniculatus, Ononis spinosa, Dorycnium pentaphyllum, Dorycnium germanicum, Dorycnium herbaceum, Dorycnium hirsutum, Medicago, Hippocrepis comosa, Lupinus polyphyllus, Tetragonolobus maritimus and Lathyrus pratensis.
The adults fly from mid May towards early August. They are active during daytime.
Habitat: This species inhabits calcareous soils including chalk downland, quarries and sea-cliffs.

Distribution: It is found in most of Europe and Asia Minor, the Caucasus, northern Iran and the Near East. It is a rare species in Belgium.

Description C’est une sésie bien distincte, avec ses six bandes jaunes sur l’abdomen. Ses ailes sont essentiellement transparentes, seulement colorées dans les coins. L’envergure est de 15-21 mm.

Biology: Les chenilles se nourrissent des raciness de Lotus et de Anthyllis vulneraria. Elles consomment aussi les plantes suivantes : Lotus corniculatus, Ononis spinosa, Dorycnium pentaphyllum, Dorycnium germanicum, Dorycnium herbaceum, Dorycnium hirsutum, Medicago, Hippocrepis comosa, Lupinus polyphyllus, Tetragonolobus maritimus et Lathyrus pratensis.
Les adultes volent de la mi-mai au début août. Ils sont actifs le jour.

Habitat : Lieux ensoleillés, friches, adrets.

Distribution: La majeure partie de l’Europe, l’Asie mineure, le Caucase, le nord de l’Iran et du Proche Orient. C’est une espèce rare en Belgique.
